The greatest band that never had a number one single is a well known 70’s Rock band named Led Zeppelin.

Led Zeppelin

Formed in September of 1968, Led Zeppelin was an English Rock band that took over the music scene for over a decade. The four members of the band consisted of Robert Plant – Singer, Jimmy Page – Lead Guitarist, John Paul Jones – Bass & Keyboards, & John Bonham – Drummer.

During their 12 year span, Led Zeppelin sold over 300-Million albums world-wide. All of their regular studio albums have reached the US Billboard Top 10 and they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1995. Although the band never officially had a number one hit, their song “Whole Lotta Love” reached the number four spot in the early seventies and their other song “Stairway To Heaven” is the most requested song of all time on the radio.

Led Zeppelin’s self-titled first studio album was recorded at Olympic Studios in London in the autumn of 1968 and it was released on January 12th, 1969. The bands blues-rock-folk sound mixed in with some psychedelic effects captured the publics attention and left people wanting more. With classic songs on their debut album like “Dazed And Confused”, ” Babe Im Gonna Leave You”, “Communication Breakdown”, and “Good Times Bad Times”, the album climbed the charts and made it into the US Bill-board top 10 within a few weeks of its release.

The band began 1969 by playing gigs on the west coast at popular clubs like Whisky a Go Go, the Fillmore West, and the Fox Theatre in San Diego. As their fan base climbed, the band moved on to bigger shows, selling out Concert halls, Stadiums, Ball Rooms, and even some Coliseums by the end of the year.

Their second album, Led Zeppelin II was released on October 22nd, 1969. It was produced by Jimmy Page, and like the first album, it was also recorded in London at Olympic Studios. Songs like “Ramble On”, “Moby Dick”, and “Whole Lotta Love” helped the band grow musically and their popularity started to soar rapidly.

As 1970 rolled in, the band continued to tour aggressively starting in January in the UK and ending in the US by September. In their first year of existence, Led Zeppelin managed to complete four US and four UK concert tours, as well as find time to record and release two albums.

Yes Led Zeppelin were the greatest. The Beatles were a pop band who couldn’t really play live very well. In fact they even gave up playing live altogether. Led Zeppelin, in contrast, regularly played between 3 and 4 hours live.

Led Zeppelin never ever even released any singles in their homeland (Britain).
