… and see what happens.

Cover songs are always a musical adventure of sorts; an opportunity to see a new perspective on an idea. But it gets really interesting when the transformation crosses genres, especially when we’re talking about rap songs being covered by rock musicians, Sometimes it works… you will find songs on this list that are nothing short of musical genius. Other times it ends up being, at best, an utter disaster; you will no doubt find a few of those here as well. In the end, it seems that it’s very much in the eye of the beholder…

Scary Kids Scaring Kids “Notorius Thugs”

Bone Thugs N Harmony and Biggie Smalls created a genuine musical masterpiece; while this falls far short, the heart is in the right place, and all in all it isn’t bad.

Framing Hanley “Lollipop”

You’d never guess a nerdy little bunch of emo white guys would pull this off, but this is an absolutely brilliant cover of Lil Wayne’s smash hit.

The Vines “Ms Jackson”

I wasn’t really sure what to do with this when I first heard it; they took Outkast and made it all…. Pink Floyd. But it grows on you…

Lagwagon “Mama Said Knock You Out”

(song starts at 1:10 mark)

What it lacks in originality it almost makes up for in attitude. Not really worthy of an L.L. song, but…

Sevendust “Going Back to Cali”

This one, on the other hand, Does L.L. justice. Might have something to do with the fact that sevendust is a great band to begin with.

Factory 81 Insane in the Brain “

You’ll either really like this or you really won’t…

Dope “New Jack Hustler”

This one’s kind of cool, especially if you’re a fan of Ice T’s old stuff.

Kottonmouth Kings “Mind Playin Tricks On Me”

The Ghetto boys were kind of like comic book rap, and so are the Kottonmouth Kings, so it’s a pretty apt cover.

Bloodhound Gang “It’s Tricky”

The Bloodhound Gang, usually as tongue in cheek as it gets, actually deliver a cover worthy of the Kings of Rock.
