A review on kings of leon’s first album.
Kings of leon are a southern rock band from Tennessee , the band consists of three brothers Jared, Caleb, Nathan and there cousin Mathew. They started out in 2000 by realising an EP called “Holly Roller Novocaine” with influences from country music and there religious upbringing. This made them sound very different from what was played on MTV because they didn’t have that’s sense of music. The bands first album Youth And Young Manhood was released in august 2003, it received good criticism from both Rollingstone magazine and NME who gave them 9/10 and 4 stars.
The album starts off with “Red morning light” there first single released which has very powerful strumming Mathew (guitar), this isn’t my favourite by them but I love the vocals of Caleb.
Next up its “Happy alone” which is one of my favourite tracks on this album, its chorus has such a country music feel to it but the guitar and bass still manage to add that indie rock touch to it.
The third track “wasted time” was there second single released from this album, the song has a very fast bass line and I recommend you to watch this song live.
Now instead of me going through all twelve tracks I will put the remaining tracks in groups. I will start with the good but not amazing songs. Since there’s only one it shouldn’t take too long, the title of the song is “Joe’s head” and although I love the bass I just cant listen to it too many times when there’s tracks like “happy alone”.
Now to the amazing songs list, which starts off with “Trani” which is I think there most liked track on the internet (especially youtube). Everything about this song is absolutely amazing and I mean everything, from the vocals to the bass which is very simple to the drums and to the rhythm and other guitar. The next track is “California waiting”, this song was released on the EP as a different version which to be honest I prefer from the Youth And Young Manhood version, but this still counts as classic Kings of Leon. From this point the songs are at there best with “Spiral staircase” a great fast paced country style song to probably there most known song “Molly’s chambers” a lively rock star song to the blues style of “Dusty” a slow and beautiful song. Now last but not least “Holly roller Novocaine” which is a song that only Kings of Leon can get away with playing and make it sound so amazing and not cheesy.
This album Rocked my brains out and I recommend it to anyone who is into good music.
