A deeper look at the lyrics of Evanescence and the singing of Amy Lee.
I’ve been listening to Evanescence for a really long time. One of the first songs I learned to play on the piano was “My Immortal”. I always found her music uplifting. Most of the people I encountered found this surprising.
I was told by person after person that they found her lyrics to be about sad things and to be “downers”. Even reading her lyrics didn’t show me this. I find that her songs involve reading between the lines. A majority of them are about love and finding things in people that you have to dig deep to see.
“Bring Me to Life” seems to be about someone falling in love, finding their soulmate; about the person who puts life into them, rather than a song about death, as some people see it.
Evanescence differs from the normal “love” songs around. Instead of singing about butterflies and Enya and being “in love”, the songs Amy Lee sings go deeper than that, into intense feelings and the depths of your heart you rarely speak of.
Besides the songs about love, there are most definitely songs about other things, but still along the same lines. Amy Lee sings about things which are real and things that affect her. She sings of pain and she sings of winning and losing and she sings from the heart every time.
While sometimes very chilling, I personally enjoy every single one of her songs and find that they give me another angle to view life from.
