Ten grunge bands you might not have heard of with a history of grunge music.
Grunge music has its origins in the mid ’80s, and is inspired by hardcore punk, heavy metal and indie rock. You can characterise grunge by the rawness found in the heavily distorted guitars (the guitar parts often being described as sludgy), hard hitting drums, moody bass, contrasting dynamics and changes in speed. The band members generally dressed shabby and there was no over the top theatrics in shows. It’s often dubbed the Seattle sound, due to the movement around the independent grunge label – Sub Pop.
The music came to the publics attention in the early ’90s due to the release of the two most notable grunge albums – Pearl Jam’s ‘Ten‘ and Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind‘.
A lot of grunge bands felt alienated when the genre became noticed, and shouldered away the title.
Ten grunge band’s I wouldn’t miss (excluding the top two, which are vital) are…..
1. Green River
2. Mudhoney
3. Mother Love Bone
4. Screaming Trees
5. Tad
6. Hole
7. Temple of the Dog
8. Soundgarden
9. Alice In Chains
10. Pagoda
