This is a detailed interpretation of the song “The Dream is gone” by Chris Trousdale: former Dream Street member. I went through the song and described when he was clearly referring to Dream Street although he claimed the song was not directed at them.
“Why did you have to lie?” (Supporters of Dream Street Entertainment and Chris Trousdale, believe that the mothers of Greg Raposo, Frankie Galasso, Matthew Ballinger and Jesse Macartney, lied to the courts about the behaviour and general conduct of the boys’ producers. The four boys sided with their parents while Chris stuck with the producers. He made a public statement saying that he didn’t blame them for doing what they thought was right, but this line may hint otherwise).
“Can you hold your head up high?”
“After all this time I’m not your fallback guy” (‘Fallback guy’ is used in the Dream Street song, ‘Jennifer, Goodbye’)
“You didn’t wanna ‘Play’” (Only Chris agreed to sing ‘I’m gonna make you love me’ with girl group ‘Play’ and as such was the only one who continued on to do the song after Dream Street split. Incidentally, he also met his future girlfriend, Anna Sunstrand who was a member in ‘Play’ at the time of the recording. The two are still together to this day)
“Baby, I won’t take the blame”
“That’s why I must dismiss you”
“I won’t miss you” (‘I miss you’ is another Dream Street song)
“Cause I don’t intend on spending my whole life dreaming” (This line was also used in the Dream Street song ‘Feel the Rain’)
“I’ve been down that street before”
“It was magic when we met” (A loose usage of the line ‘oh it’s magic when we meet’ from the song, ‘It happens every time’ Dream Street’s breakthrough single).
“And I never will forget”
“Baby after all is said and done” (This could refer to the long period in which the five boys of Dream Street were forced to wait a lengthy amount of time for the lawsuit to close up).
“The dream is gone” (Dream quite obviously refers to Dream Street).
“Cause I just don’t understand” (‘They Don’t’ Understand’. Another song by Dream Street).
“We had the future in our hands” (This could quite possibly be a reference to Dream Street’s increasing popularity at the time the lawsuit against the producers was filed. Although the boy band movement of the mid nineties was waning at the time Dream Street came onto the scene, they had a large fan base and were almost certainly about to be huge, with the movie ‘The Biggest Fan’ starring Chris Trousdale and with cameo appearances from the other four boys, a new single released and talk of a new album in the works, Dream Street were doing just fantastic until the legal bomb was dropped. Consequentially, ‘The Biggest Fan’ – although it wrapped production in 2002 – was not put out for general release until around 2004/2005).
“Baby there’s no way to carry on
The dream is gone
Who said that love was fair?”
“It’s gone beyond repair” (The five boys of Dream Street were legally forbidden to ever perform together as a group again).
“If you’re thinking of taking me over” (‘You’re taking me over’. Another DS song).
“Just don’t go there”
“I gave with all my heart” (‘With all my heart’. Dream Street’s last released single before the split).
“But you tore it all apart”(Chris could be blaming the other four boys for the split. It must be said here, that several existing Dream Street fans believe that if all five boys had been on the one side, either nothing would have changed – They would have stayed with Dream Street Entertainment therefore incurring no changes – or would have carried on as a new band with the same line-up, different producers and different name – had they all sided against the producers).
“Look how that silly love song” (‘Silly love song’ is used in ‘It happens every time’)
“Went so wrong”
“Cause I’ve always known I’d go out on my own” (Although the band was equally talented, Chris seemed to have a knack of standing out as the most popular and – by far – was considered the most popular amongst their female fans with Jesse and Greg following, then Frankie and finally, Matt)
“Guess it was just a matter of time” (‘Matter of time’ another DS song. Though rarely performed as it was written for when the boys’ voices were higher and – due to their developing vocal range- was often removed from concerts and performances due to mistakes often happening vocally).
“Such a close harmony” (The five boys were very close when they were together)
But we lost the beat
And now we’re so far apart, oh yes we are” (‘They don’t understand’ lyrics)
Now it’s my destiny
Be anything I wanna be” (Lyrics from ‘Dream on’ – Dream Street)
We could have reached for the stars” (Another possible ‘Dream On’ reference)
No turning back, no no
Such a perfect dream come true (‘It happens every time’ lyrics)
I gotta say goodbye, goodbye
You crossed the line and I don’t need you by my side
So long, the dream is gone
