Six Reasons Why Michael Jackson Was the King of Pop

My short tribute to Michael Jackson.

Fans of Michael Jackson have their own reasons why they hail him as the King of Pop. Here are mine.

1.  He got people to sing. Michael did with his voice what Eddie Van Halen does with his guitar.

2.  He got people to dance.  Generally speaking, guys (males) can’t and don’t want to dance.  Michael made dancing looked so cool (think moonwalk) that even the most rigid guy on the planet would want to dance like him.

3.  He was a music genius.  Michael had the ability to combine pop and rock music seamlessly.  Listen to “Beat It”, “Dirty Diana”, and “Give In To Me”.

4.  He made the song “Smooth Criminal”.  Guys won’t admit it, but I’m sure they wanna go “Ow!” every time this song is playing.  I know I do.

5.  He didn’t rely on looks alone.  Michael had real talent, and he knew it.  He realized that his songs should be enough.  He didn’t bother to make himself look brawny just so he could attract the female audience.  Now compare him to someone like Justine Timberlake, who went from being a skinny boy band member to becoming a muscle-bound solo “artist”.  The only reason why Timberlake looks the way he does now is because he knows he’s got nothing else going for him, since his music is crap.  If the world had no females, his music career would be over. Michael, on the other hand, drew BOTH male and female fans around the world.

6.  He made me LIKE his songs.  A little info about myself: I used to listen to a lot of heavy metal music. From Guns N’ Roses and Skidrow to Metallica and Megadeth, heavy metal bands played a big part in my teenage life.  I was a true metal head.  Do you know any die-hard Guns N’ Roses fan who could also appreciate Michael Jackson’s songs?  Not many, I’m sure.  And that’s exactly what Michael could do–break barriers.  If he could get someone like me, a rock enthusiast,  to actually LIKE his pop songs, then he certainly deserved to be called the King of Pop.

I’m not a big fan of Michael Jackson, and I definitely would not call him a hero as some fans would, but I have to give credit where credit’s due.  Michael was truly one of a kind.  As there will never be another Michael Jordan, there will never be another Michael Jackson.

R.I.P. Michael.

This is a good article. Had I not seen the rise and fall of Michael Jackson over the years, I might look for his music on this basis.

I liked Michael as part of the Jackson Five when he was a boy but did not follow him as a sol performer and thought he was getting very strang but I like what you said at the end of your article. No matter what we thought of him personally, he did have a big impact on the music industry and deserves credit for it.

Well, since he passed on it is obvious that he was a genius, watch him sing as a young child live and he is a flawless performer, has great timing, never took a lesson. No one today can imitate him. There are NO OTHER CHILD SINGERS LIKE HIM. I have looked on the internet and no one else even comes close. Listen to his song “I’m A Big Boy” recorded by Steeltown when he was 8 years old. (it’s on the internet) he was amazing. He was a child star who then grew up and did “Thriller”. His later work is also good. The song “Man In The Mirror” was nominated for a Grammy but lost to “Don’t Worry Be Happy”. Why? There was no comparison. He was robbed. “Man In The Mirror” was a great song. Also, the “Invincible” album was very long but overall it has some innovative stuff on it. He kept trying to transcend different music genres and combine different elements of music. He was the 20th Century’s Mozart. I wish more musicians would talk about his work. Whenever I hear one speak about him they seem like they totally appreciate him and his contributions.

You are wrong, Michael does not combine rock and pop. Michael did hard rock music: “Beat It”,”Black or white”, “Dirty Diana”, and “Give In To Me”, “D.S.”
Michael was the most sucessfull rock singer in the 1980s, he did the black rock and roll (soul, funk, disco, dance)
and the white rock and roll (hard rock)

Michael Jackson was coronated as the “latest King of rock ‘n’ roll” in 1984.

In 1989 he was named by Elizabeth Taylor as the “King of pop, rock and soul” (King of popular music, rock music and soul music).

Pop is short for popular, then pop music is an abbreviation of popular music. Pop music (popular music) includes blues, country, rock, etc

But Jackson is particularly the most important rock singer, he is the true king of rock music in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s

genius? your kidding right? he never composed his own music, he couldnt write music. what instrument did he play? he sounded the same from off the wall to this last turd….”michael” he gets too much credit. music was around before him. his genre was around. he stole his dance moves from bob fosse. just watch ’snake in the grass’ from the little prince on you tube. he did make it more expensive to make music videos. in the end, they became a joke also.
