Are You Serious?: The Five Most Overrated Bands

There are a few bands in the world who’s popularity, critically or commercially, doesn’t match up with their talent. In this article, I name five such bands that are in my honest opinion, overrated.

  1. DragonForce

Oh my goodness, where to begin with this one. For once I’m at a loss of words but I’ll start off by saying DragonForce is quite possibly one of the worst metal bands in the world, to echo the words of ex-American Idol judge Simon Cowell. I’m absolutely serious. Ok, enough with the Cowell-esque phrases. DragonForce’s main selling point is speed. In fact, they were critically acclaimed as the fastest power metal band. This will probably entertain your average 13 year old but no, that is not who this music is marketed towards, they’re absolutely serious.
The sad thing is they’re far from the fastest in their genre. And even for a ‘fast band’, what they’re playing does not appear to be all that difficult. One thing they do excel in, however, is packing songs with more repetition than your average Police single. That’s right. If you couldn’t get “da do do do, da da da da” out of your head as a teeanger, you’ll probably find this band all the more obnoxious and it’s not even just in their lyrics. Their music is also quite repetitive.
Bland, showy without actually showing anything, trite and repetitive all are adjectives you could use to describe this band.

  2. Metallica

Oftentimes viewed as the ‘best thrash band ever’ by many but to me there are far more interesting bands out there, especially within the same genre. Their music ranges from a kind of garage rock to thrash metal and none of these styles are very interesting. This is especially true for their more aggressive rock material, which sounds more like an angry teenager decided to forgo all of the important stuff and release the music to disk. And hell, I’m all for experimentation but not when it sounds like your drums are trash lids. Lars Ulrich is a standard drummer playing standard and sometimes wonky rhythms and Hammett is not that great of a guitarist, let alone a great shredder. His approach to playing is entirely too same-y. All in all, some of their arrangements are smart but the result almost always feels shallow. They’re a forgettable band at best.

  3. Oasis

Oasis, the band with the popular song known as “Wonderwall“.. So many of their songs either sound like a really bad mish-mash of many other ‘retro’ bands who weren’t very interesting in the first place or entirely too same-y. Add on to this the fact that compositionally, they fall flat on their face. Songs will meander a little and ultimately go nowhere. This is especially painful during more instrumental tracks. I don’t know about you but for me this doesn’t make for very compelling music. It’s like, “yeah, we’re Oasis and uh.. We play guitars and drums.. and stuff”. ..Really?

  4. Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Red Hot Chili Peppers played a funk heavy style of rock that also tried to mix in hip hop and certain elements of punk. That’s it. This was essentially their style in a nutshell and they stayed with it throughout their career.. And it wasn’t even that spectacular, nor interesting. The Chili Peppers’ front man, Anthony Kiedis was also known for his jealousy towards Mike Patton, Faith No More’s front man. The argument? Patton was trying to steal his style. Guess what Anthony? No vocal performance of yours on any Peppers album even holds a candle to the vocals on Patton’s more tame projects.

  5. Pink Floyd

No, I’m not trying to troll you. In my honest opinion, Pink Floyd is the most grossly overrated band of all time. Dark Side of the Moon is a prime example of just why I think this. Their basic goal is to take simple themes and draw them out to the point of absurdity. Besides this, nothing they’re playing is even marginally interesting to me. So what you end up with is overlong music with a bunch of random noises alongside dull, airy keyboards, all of which is about as mentally stimulating as repeatedly filling in your full name on op-scan sheets. Their material with Syd Barrett is another story but still all the time. Basically, take the already tired Floyd formula and try to turn it into something that tries not to make sense. Even when it lets up, it’s still lifeless.
To me it’s confusing how this band reached the level of popularity and critical acclaim they did. Perhaps it was the time?

After reading this, I now conclude it’s the RED HOT CHILI PEPPER’s fault why this surprisingly good (yes it’s surprising. Just take a look and kill me if the first one you can see is a well-written article. Not with Title’s such as ‘WARNING, TRIGGER OBESITY MORE ANTIBIOTICS’, no. Kill me) albeit negative article ended up in the fruits section. But great job, man. Hope you get more views with your article…but seriously, try to get this out of here. :p

That does tend to be the case. Talent and skill rarely do match up.
