This year I’m going to do a monthly survey of the heavy metal releases as opposed to a numbered set of them. The releases may actually come out slightly later than the month be summarized as seen from the Orange Goblin album, which has received most of its press this month regardless.
5. Dodecahedron – Dodecahedron: This is an album that recalls the likes of Deathspell Omega, but with an even more avant-garde flavour that leads to some strangely structured songs. It’s a compelling album that verges towards weird slightly too often as well.
4. Almah – Motion: This is a progressive/power metal album that brings an energetic sound to the mix with some excellent riffs and melodies. The music on the album outweighs the somewhat mediocre vocals.
3. Farsot – Insects: This is an interesting black metal album that has progressive tendencies in a similar manner to what Enslvaed portrays. There is a harsher nature to the band, but avant-garde tendencies as well.
2. Orange Goblin – A Eulogy for the Damned: This is a great blend of the sounds of bands like Cathedral with a slight southern flavour. It makes for a stoner/doom album that is great fun to pick up and listen to immediately.
1. Alcest – Les Voyages de L’Ames: This album has less of a shoegaze element than previous efforts and shows a wonderful new sound coming forth that appeals more to me. I appreciate the changes the band has made which make their new album sound like an emotional indie work.
