The IE’s unique hip hop dance competition takes the floor at the Municipal Auditorium in Riverside, CA.

In 1997, a fledgling dance crew was started at the University of California, Riverside when students with a love for dance coagulated and formed what is known as the 909 Hip-Hop Dance Troupe. For the next 12 years, the collective would serve as the Inland Empire’s representative dance crew when it came to one of the four cornerstones of hip hop culture: b-boying with an eclectic fusion of contemporary dance and other styles, new and old. 909 has traveled up and down The Golden State and all the way to Sin City showcasing the art of dance with their unique, unabashed style backed by an impeccable taste of hip hop music.
This year, 909 will be hosting their ninth annual Ultimate Brawl, a hip hop dance competition that pits the best dance crews in California against one another. While the dance crews will be vying for bragging rights and peer accolades, the ultimate goal is to continue promoting the art of dance; especially in a region that does not obtain as much fanfare as Los Angeles County.
“Through Ultimate Brawl, 909 Hip Hop Dance Troupe hopes to spread the art of hip hop and dance throughout the community,” says Stacy Wong, Event Coordinator for Ultimate Brawl. “Because the Inland Empire is so far away from the big dance communities, Ultimate Brawl is a chance for us to bring the dance community here.”
Dance crews that will be participating in this year’s Ultimate Brawl come from all parts of Southern California, including 220 Second To None (San Diego), Barkada Modern (Pomona), Beat Jerkeez (Los Angeles), CADC (Irvine), Common Ground (Irvine), GRV (Pomona), Main Stacks (Berkeley), PAC Modern (Long Beach), and Samahang Modern (Los Angeles). In addition, exhibition performances will include dance routines from 909 (Riverside), Breed (Orange County), Mavyn (Fullerton), The Minorities (Pomona), Poreotics, and “Secrets,” a project by Addison O’Conner and Joanna David. The event will take place on Sunday, May 3rd at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium in downtown Riverside beginning at 5pm.
