Lil Wayne – Tha Carter III Review

A review of the new Lil Wayne CD, Tha Carter III.

So you motherfuckers thought I didn’t do rap? You thought wrong. By far the crown jewel of the month, Lil Wayne graces us with one of the most anticipated rap albums of the year. Starting with 3-Peat, you know you’re in for something good. Shortly after, club bangers A Milli and Got Money hit, and Waynes flow is in full force, keeping you enthralled. The placement of those tracks one after another holds my vote for best track placement on a rap album thus far. Infact, this is one of my favorite rap albums, period. Weezy brings many different tones and varys his flow accordingly. You can almost feel each breath exhaled on Playing With Fire, and the raw passion in You Ain’t Got Nuthin. Guest appearances from Fabulous, Jay-Z and T-Pain anchor songs as if Wayne wasn’t good enough by himself. Tha Carter III has everything covered, from gangster rap, to slow love songs, and it all blends seamlessly. In fact, the infectious hit single Lolipop is the worst track on the album in my opinion, so you can imagine how good the rest is. Beats are just as technical as the flow, bringing very unique bass patterns and intricate tom lines. The production as a whole is absolutely flawless, even when vocals don’t sound pristine, it all feels right. But hey, what did you expect from Kanye West, David Banner, and Swizz Beatz? Even if it was half assed, it’d still be better than 90% of the other shit out there. It doesn’t get much better than this. That is, until Tha Carter IV drops. Do yourself a favor and drop anything you knew about Lil Wayne, and pick this album up, you won’t regret it. In a sea of average releases, this one stands high above the rest, making June a good month for music, indeed.
