Have you ever wondered how much money rap artists really make a year? They may brag a lot, but if you do the research you will be surprised how much they actually make!
Do you think rappers make a lot of money?
It’s common for people to think that their favorite rapper is getting filthy rich off of their album sales, but in reality they don’t make as much as you think they do because of their record label, manager, lawyer, accountant, and IRS taxes. The average rap artist makes under a dollar for every album they sell, and the album cost $10.00, imagine how much money Soulja Boy is about to make for putting his album for sale on Amazon for under $3.00!! He won’t make much, even DMX has spoke out about the music industry robbing artists of their cash in a song called “The Industry“.
If you take a look at how much is spent on making an album, and how much money is made back, it’s probably a disappointing number, unless the artist goes platinum or more.
Major Recording companies end up with most of the album sale cash, but independent labels usually split it 50/50 with the artist, so independent artists can sell half of what an artist on a major deal can sell, and still have made more cash from their album!
Rap artists are not completely broke, they are barely ever broke unless they blow their money stupidly, because they get paid royalty checks! They get paid for all that radio play, because its their music, they own it, although they basically rent it off to labels and lose a certain percentage of the pay, they still get paid, so an artist like Lil Wayne is probably cashing in on the radio play!
Basically the music industry isn’t what it’s cracked up to be, but rappers can still make a lot of money from performing, features and many other things, ring tone sales also help some rappers out a lot (just ask Soulja Boy), so if your trying to get into the music industry you have to make sure you stay on your grind and be smart when it comes to business. Rappers like Diddy, 50 Cent, and Jay-Z are making more money than most can dream of because they’re about doing business, so learn from successful artists, and educate yourself on the music industry if you plan on getting in it!
Here is what the former co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records, Damon Dash has said about the the money made from Hip hop..
“The music business isn’t so profitable, especially not hip-hop. I couldn’t buy what I wanted to buy. I’m talking cooks and drivers. I got into clothes to make money. The people in this business all think they’ve made it because they’re in charge of their little record labels. “I’m like, this isn’t even my main source of income. I already did this business – and I made movies and I designed clothes and I got my own vodka and my own Swiss watch maker. “It’s all about finding ways to make money off an upscale urban product. That’s what I do. Period.”
