This is a review of the thought-provoking lyrics written by Sara Groves in her song entitled “Going Home”.
Sara Groves really has a way of capturing deep thoughts and feelings that are difficult to describe in words. As a Christian, there is a restlessness that you feel, a longing to be in Heaven with God. And the more you take a stand for Christ in a world that hates Him, the more you feel out of place. The lyrics of this song by Sara Groves really grab me because they capture so perfectly what I experience as a Christian.
There is a hope inside of me, and I just can’t wait to go and be with Jesus. A nonbeliever would probably read that and think that I am being morbid, and that there is something wrong with me because I look forward to death. But don’t get me wrong. I enjoy life to the fullest. Jesus came to give us life, and life more abundantly. But I am also excited to dwell with God forever and be done with this life down here. Sara Groves stated in an interview that this song was inspired by an intense longing for Heaven.
In the chorus of the song, she writes, “Going home, I’ll meet you at the table.” This is in reference to Revelation 19:6-9: the marriage supper of the Lamb. There is the shout of a huge crowd saying “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns. Let us be glad and rejoice and honor Him. For the time has come for the wedding feast of the Lamb, and His bride has prepared herself. She is permitted to wear the finest white linen.” The fine linen represents the good deeds done by the people of God. This can be pretty difficult for our human minds to grasp. But what I understand is that we will meet our Savior in the air, and we will be with Him forever! That’s what matters to me.
There is a frustration that we feel as we want so badly to feel Jesus in a tangible way. But as long as we are in this body, we are limited by our five senses. Sara Groves writes, “I’m confined by my senses to really know what You are like. You are more than I can fathom and more than I can guess, and more than I can see with human sight.”
When we worship Him, we get a just a taste of what He is like. We can feel Him with our spirit, and there is nothing like it. When we get into deep worship, nothing else matters, and being in His presence is the best place to be. I know there is more, but I don’t know exactly what it will be like because I haven’t experienced it yet. But I know it will be awesome, and I get chills when I imagine what it will be like to be face to face with Jesus.
