Calvin Harris makes fantastic party music.
Calvin Harris is a electronica musician originally born in Scotland. That is the extent of background information you need to know about him. Let us talk about his style of music instead of the musician himself.
Harris’ first album entitled, “I Created Disco” was released June 29, 2007. This is a wall to wall hit album! I am biased. From the first track entitled “Merrymaking at my Place” (enough said) straight through to the semi-dark end all entitled “ElectroMan” it is a booming success. The title song of the album, “I Created Disco”, is essentially an instrumental track with a few cryptic lines of dialogue, not lyrics. The album is different than anything I have ever heard. It is unique by seeming so familiar.
His style or genre of music is best described as Electronica pop. Instead maybe I would be better off simply calling it party music. He incorporates fantastically catchy bass lines with ultra-high energy melodies. This not only makes you want to bob your head but also move your feet. Put on “I Created Disco” at a party, then watch as people get off of their asses and begin to dance spontaneously.
The beats are ballsy, the words are wistful. The music is simple to the feel, but complex to the ear. If you are a typical American hater of Techno music, as I was, understand that this is not techno. This is Calvin Harris. Give the album a shot and you will be impressed. In fact if you make it through the first song you will more than likely let the entire CD play out, and then put it on album repeat on your iTunes!
Calvin Harris’ next album, “Ready For The Weekend” was released in August of this year. It is also a smashing hit! I still enjoy “I Created Disco” more yet for a sophomore album he is definitely not in a slump. The songs still have his distinctive flare and dance-ability. In combination both these albums give you about two solid hours of incredible dance music. If you are the type who enjoys parties that last all night, and need something new for the wee hours of the night then Calvin Harris is a must.
