I explain just why I have so much disdain for the band Sugarland in a comical fashion.
Umm I hate Sugarland. I am sitting here listening to the idiot guy talk about how he bought a cowboy hat he liked on eBay because his friends could not believe he was making a go in country music and he wanted to prove it, then 4 months later they had a record deal. Because we all know that a stupid moron hat makes you country. He always had crappy rock bands that flopped so they decided to try in country and in the predictable world of Nashville formula crap music…. they did “make it” when people like Toby Keith, Alan Jackson, Clint Black, Garth Brooks, you know, people with talent, were turned down over and over in Nashville. That is what I hate about “Music City“, the phony bull crap. I like real artist like Miranda Lambert who was raised in the country hunting and fishing and writing songs with her song writing daddy and have country in her heart and soul and would never sell that soul to “make it” because she knows who she is.
Jennifer Nettles was NOT a country singer at all in the beginning, she wanted to be a rock/.blues singer which she failed at. I have done my research and her first album pre Sugarland has very little southern accent at all…Funny because now she has more twang then a Fender. I have never heard anyone over sing the way she does. It sounds ridiculous and disgusting. Sometimes when you hear her talk she sounds like Reba and then the next minute she sounds like some girl from California…hmm I smell a rat.
She has a good voice but NOT the way she uses it. By the way every song that is released is worse with the obviously forced twang than the one before. Nobody’s voice sounds like that naturally. Nobody. It is so pushed too hard and unreal.
Even if she did not sound like a cat in heat being skinned with a dull knife, her personality is appalling. She is the most arrogant, pretentious, contrived person I have ever seen. In interviews she answers every single question like it is the most profound statement that has ever been made. She talks about her songwriting, which is so formulated to be a hit and not from the heart and soul, like it is the most life changing wonderful thing in existence and that she is a legend with the likes of Johnny Cash. She has not an ounce of humbleness in her entire stick straight up and down body. She comes off as so unreal and contrived that it is hard to watch her even speak. When I found out that she came to country music because everything else failed, it reaffirmed what I felt about her all along. I hate when people are not real, when they put on an act to be something they are not. Her trained monkey Christian is pitiful and I see her going solo in the future when she gets sick of carrying him. Hell he never even talks, she gets all the glory while he dances around in his clown suit.

I can’t stand Sugarland. I don’t mind the songs but I can’t stand the way Jennifer Nettles sings! She sounds like someone making fun of country music and how twangy it is. She has a horrible voice! I can’t believe they are so popular. Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard. I stopped listening to country radio partly because of them. Also because of Carrie Underwood and the general direction country music is going. It seems like popular country music is actually a spoof of real country music. It’s all about white trash and rednecks. I miss Alan Jackson, George Strait, and Trisha Yearwood. Where I live, the radio station plays the same ten songs a thousand times a day. I work in a cubicle next to someone who has country radio on ALL DAY and I hear “All I Wanna Do” by Sugarland, “Should’ve Said No” by Taylor Swift and countless Carrie Underwood songs over and over and over and over and over…. you get the idea. I can’t stand it!!!!! I have to try to drown it out by putting on Pandora and playing artists like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, and Johnny Horton. Sugarland is the absolute WORST!

This is freakin awesome! Lol. Thank God I’m not the only one who finds her absolutely annoying. I’m not tryin to say that she doesn’t have a good voice…but the way she sings is ridiculous. I’m from Tennessee and my accent ain’t even that strong. It’s horrible, I can’t stand to listen to her crap.

No wonder that other girl bailed on the band….that must have been quite a decision to walk away from that cash cow. Something is definitely up!
But I grew up in the next town over from Nettles home in Douglasville, Georgia, and I’ve never heard an accent as thick as that one. Not in suburban Atlanta….puh-leeze. Nobody talks like that around there.
On the other hand, when they are on TV, it’s like a car wreck..I just can’t look away. I have been known to hit hit the mute button a time or two.
Especially during the ‘Crossroads’ show with Sugarland and Bon Jovi. There was footage of Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, and Nettles talking about writing songs…and she said “….what’s so funny, is how I’m so southern and ya’ll aren’t…blah blah blah”…MUTE!!! It was embarrassing….I forget what the rest of her comment was…
The bottom line…fake as hell.

I’m sitting here watching Jennifer Nettles crash land onto the ending of Adele’s “Chasing Pavements” at the 51st Grammy Awards. Please. Will someone put up a secret clothesline and then CHASE Miss Nettles with a knife…straight into the clothesline so that she hits the clothelines full-force and slices her larynx in half?
I was very gratified and relieved to find this blog. I was starting to wonder: “Is it ONLY me? Surely others must agree how this woman’s categorical, certifiable caterwaling is irritating…and are as stunned as I am how Miss Nettles’ got the whole American music scene fooled?” What’s particularly JARRING is when she assaults her vowels. She attacks an “AY” or an “AH” with spine-shattering, terrifying shrillishness; absolutely freakin IRRITATING. Whenever I hear Jennifer Nettle’s voice, with the abrasiveness of a coil of barbed wire around a state penetentiary — OH! The braying; shrapnel-like…pelting eardrums like millions of bits of leadshot…I cannot help myself. I have a super-powered compulsion to THROW the nearest thing available. A shoe. A dish. A chair. Witness the tune: “All I Want to Do.” That FIRST VOWEL’s utterance. WHAT can I throw!?? Caterwauling. Absolutely, cataclysmically irritating. Shockingly awful. Horrid and bad. All of America is being spoon-fed this hack vocalist’s catewauling. They THINK they are to like it. If only American Idol existed. She could have showed up at The Holiday Inn and gotten 15 minutes of fame and we’d be done with her.
And tonight? There was poor Adele with her percious, hint-of-Dusty-Springfield soul,…who must close-up the shutters…and allow this astoundingly awful baloney-country vocalist step all over Adele’s lovely things. Poor Adele. It was her first Grammys, too.
If only it was the LAST Sugarland Grammys.

Hell yes, you are right on! I’ve thought all of this since I first heard of Sugarland. The thing is there are SO many other groups like them… especially TAYLOR SWIFT, the girl is HORRIBLE and NOT COUNTRY! Someone bring back real country with real emotions, real talent, real meaning!

Wow…I didn’t realize there were so many people that feel the same way about her voice as I do. I was beginning to feel that I was alone in this world. The sad thing is, she has a beautiful voice. But she ruins it by singing from the front of her throat and trying to add this ridiculous southern twang. It’s like nails on a chalk board to me.

No one has even mentioned the way she plants her feet about 2 feet apart and stays that way while performing. It looks very strange. The way she stands on top of the forced twang is sickening. I am so glad I found this site. Hilarious to read all of the other observations!!

I just saw Sugarland open for Kenny Chesney this weekend at the Link in Philly on 6/20/09. It was the longest hour and a half of my life. Nettles voice sounds like someone pushing a cat through a trumpet. She over does the twangy thing in her voice to the point that it physically pains you to listen to it any longer. The entire show she moved around the stage, doing very contrived, choreographed hand gestures and dance moves, all the while looking up to the sky as if to thank the lord for the great gift she has been given and allowed to bless us with. I would take Sara Evan, Shania Twain, or Faith Hill anyday. The added bonus was they played the Sugarland CMT videos behind the band and wouldn’t ya know it, every video star’d Nettles in every shot. I hate Sugarland.

My brother sent this to me, and we have been hating sugarland since the very beginning. My roommate actually likes them, and it literally makes it difficult for me to still be friends with her. I like the cat analogies, personally I think she sounds like a cat that is under the hood of your car and when you start it the fan belt gets them. Although cat in heat being skinned with a dull knife is pretty accurate too.
Even my Grandma, the sweetest lady in the world, would slap Jennifer Nettles if she had the chance.
As far as the way country music is going, I have no urge to hear people sing about how country they are because they are uneducated and have dirty boots and drink all the time and are generally white trash. It’s giving actual cowboys a bad name.
I like that Toby Keith Song where there is one line that says “Got herself a record deal; can’t even sing a note.” He has to be singing about her!

I live in southern Georgia and nobody in the south really freakin’ sounds like that. I just read this after hearing the youtube clip of Nettles’ cover of “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” where she smiles as she sings the hanging part. She is a giiiiiiiiaaaant robot and that horrendous twangy voice…it’s like Fran Drescher was in a Winn-Dixie line and got into a fight with a terminally ill marmoset. Bless her heart, she really is deluded into thinking she’s great. I hope her true calling involves a vow of silence. Thaaaayyyynks.

This is so great! i really thought i was alone as well in thinking that Sugarland is horrible! i live in Georgia too, about an hour’s drive from Atlanta, and it is a disgrace that southerners are portrayed as she wishes to be. everyone always thinks i’m crazy for hating Sugarland. i am SO GLAD that others feel the same way!

Look—Country and Western music does not exist anymore…has not for years, supply and demand…there is MUCH more money crossing over to mainstream radio and concert audiences—listen to Willie Nelson’s XM station sometime…THAT’s country, in it’s true form…most of the cats that play in Nashville are former touring or recording guys from NYC and LA, CA who are from left over rock musicians who figured Country had longevity…where with rock & pop players where u were a complete joke and an old man at 30, in Nashville u could be just getting started at 30!—Shania Twain (ground zero), Alabama, Taylor Swift (what in the Christ is country about her????) Pretty boy keith urban—the whole thing is a parady of itself…it has no idea WTF it is…but i will agree on one thing, Sugarland is part of the problem, not the part of the solution

I get what you’re saying. Her performance last night on the CMA awards was horrible. It sounded like she was doing a bad impression of herself. Since she is bad to begin with it was only worse. That accent is not from anywhere on this planet. A cat being strangled would have sounded better.

I guess it puzzles me as to why someone that likes Sugarland would be interested in this article. Bob, I can’t carry a tune in a bucket, and nobody knows that better than me. The lady is fake as hell and that’s the problem. Her accent is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard in my life, and it’s funny that when she accepted her awards the accent was nowhere to be found. If you like her songs that’s great, but you have to admit she’s fake, and acts like a total idiot on stage…Come on Bob, be honest, it’s not that hard!
By the way, I read all the comments and laughed so hard I had tears…I don’t think I dislike her as much as some of you do, but man, funny stuff!

OMG, your article was brilliant. You really nailed all the points and there isn’t anything to add. Except to say that I love you for this. The 2010 CMA ballerina act was a train wreck. She’s now crossing into ’so bad it’s good’ territory for me!! I almost get the sense that her other half doesn’t even like her. This Sugarland phenomenon~?~how can so many people be duped by this con? They just won ‘Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal’ this year-??? What the what!?? Wow-who knew?? I saw Sugarland open for “pretty boy” Keith Urban and both I and the crowd loved them. I’m not from the south so I can’t speak on the phoniness of her accent but they were entertaining as hell so who cares? “Ya’ll” remind me of the whiners giving the tours of the old plantations that lament over how their way of life has been destroyed by “the war of northern aggression”. Get over it people–country music has changed and I frankly like it!

Wow. Um. Sugatland is frekin amazing. I’m sitting in my bed listening to my Christmas present. All the Jennifer nettlesnband CDs and all Soul Miners Daughter CDs and read your blog and yell at I read. Why? Her pre sugarland didn’t fail. Failing is like a one hit wonder. Was any of her pre sugarland stuff a hit? No! And yeah she changed genres but we all don’t just stay in one genre. We all have different taste. And her pre sugarland music has country to it. Kristian on the other hand same exsact thing! Her accent? Well. I’m from new Orleans and I started listenin to country a few years back. And now I have a somewhat country accent. When your around an accent like country you start picking up things they say. Her pre sugarland stuff too you can hear sounthern in her voice. Jennifer is beautiful, hilarious, down to earth, and every GOOD thing there is. People like you don’t know good taste. Kristian does get to talk! Hes on twitter more than jenn is! His blogs are so funny too. I would go on and on but I have to get back to Twitter to see if a fellow Sugarcube found a sugarland interview I’m looking for.

And that interview I was looking for is the perfect thing you need! It’s from this year and the interviewer asked a bunch of questions about her Jennifer nettles band stuff. And she kept having to remember. She barely thinks about her past music. She LOVES what’s she doing now and that old stuff is just the way she wrote music at that time. and she was growing up. She got her anger out in her Jennifer nettles band music.. That why it’s so folk/country/rock/blues…She was gonna end up goin country anyway! Again she LOVES what she’s doing in country music and she’s HAPPY where she is, and if u have a problem with seeing someone happy then u honestly have issues.. Cuz I don’t care if I was doing Rock music or country or rap! I’m doing something called MUSIC! and it’s gonna make me Happy no matter what. And I think every artist may agree. When u live and breathe music as much as she does your bound to cross over your bound to have have different taste and different styles.
So u say her old band failed what if it was never meant to get big? Soooo HA!

First off… the cowboy hat thing? It’s like you’re saying that anyone who wears a cowboy hat isn’t and could never be country.
Second… JENNIFER NETTLES HAS THE MOST AMAZING COUNTRY VOICE IN THE HISTORY OF COUNTRY VOICES. If you cannot accept that then its a wonder how your ears aren’t dead from listening to the kind of music you have listened to.
Third… A fake accent? Really? She grew up down south. Everyone has an accent down there. Like everyone. Dude. It’s not fake, I promise you that.
Fourth… if you are immature enough to post this article full of such lies and stupidity, be my guest. If you actually went and listened to Sugarland’s music and message behind it… you would understand why your post is so utterly repulsive and offensive to every Sugarfan in the world. Honey Child, I’m sure your the one speak about any of this! Jennifer & Kristain**** (learn how to spell) Are as real as they get. They aren’t going any where for a long while. As you can tell, Kristian has a new style, that hat is what made Sugarland!! I’m sure every time you see a hat like that you will think of Sugarland! holy crap. Is all you people do on here is gossip about how you hate her voice? Sugarland is a popular duo today and they must be doing something right..What are you people doing? Sitting here and writing about how she is fake and how she is doing nothing right…well maybe if you watched interviews and knew more of her background then you know know that you are wrong. Before you judge someone like that you should have the correct information.. This article is pointless.and if you dont like them then why spend probably a few hours writing this drawn out piece? All im saying is Sugarland may have a few twang songs, but what country artist doesnt? They are an amazing duo and will strive to better and better each year.
If you hate them so much maybe you shouldnt spend your time on them. REAL fans will give them the time of day.

I think I’ll comment on your article before I address the immature twats who have decided the best use of their time would be to verball abuse you.
My review is probably very unhepful as I’ve never even heard of Sugarland so – what’s the best I can say about it? You haven’t resulted to mindless insults, as far as I can tell you’ve tried to be fair – “She does have talent”, and you’ve given an honest opinion, so good for you. After all – all of this is your view, so who is anyone else to insult you for having that view?
Now to the reviewers – the ones who called Auto Parts jealous: Why? Really, what proof do you have? You could say that about anyone – for example, those of you who say that Gary Glitter (Who, may I say, I hate with a passion, but that’s beside the point) is a git and all manner of bad things – well, you could be jealous of him because before he did all these awful things he had a moderate degree of success.
One reviewer I seem to see called you fat – now unless they have met you, which I highly doubt, that’s just an insult without proof, and so in fact it’s slander. Really, why would you give people such a low opinion of yourself by claiming to know things that really you have no idea about?
Please reviewers, if you disagree that’s fine, but if you feel the need to state it at least do it in a coherent, perhaps halfway courteous manner which would make people more inclined to listen to you? I feel it may be a little too late for this as instead you’ve ranted on at Auto Parts like she’s responsible for all the hatred inside of you. If you disagree with something then DON’T COMMENT ON IT! After all, the article was called “Why I hate Sugarland”, did you expect glowing praise?

Arrogance? All of her songs are about LOVE. Loving yourself and loving others and she and Kristian actually write all of their own songs (Talent) Do your favorites write their own songs????
You are entitled to not like them, I don’t like death metal. But, I don’t write mean things about GWAR, I just don’t listen. You should consider the same path or find things you like and focus on them.
Knowing Jennifer over many years I will say two last things.
She would be sad that her fans have said such mean things to you.
If you met her, in her very real accent she would say something extremely kind and make you feel like the only person in the world.
You would very much regret having uttered a mean word about someone as genuine and loving. She would remember your name and she would make you a fan. She writes about what she knows and always has. When she was angsty and young, she wrote rock and now that she is happy and older and wiser she writes about love. (NOT FAKE AT ALL) If only all artists allowed you to glimpse at their true selves the way she does, the world would be a better place.

I love country music, but hate with a passion Jennifer Nettles. Can’t stand to watch her face, mouth, jestures, fake twang, cockiness. I thought I was along on this one and decided to see if anyone else out there felt the same. Looks like I was right one, so many others can’t stand her either, Oh yeah!

Im glad theres other people that cant stand jennifer nettles. I hate her with a passion…the # 1 person that annoys me the most is “flo” the progressive insurance woman and # 2 Jennifer nettles, she is so fake, you can tell her accent is fake, im from kentucky i know what real southern people sound like and they dont sound like her at all…she over does it and its as fake as pam andersons tits lol. If i had the choice to listen to 24 hours of screaming pigs or jennifer nettles i would rather hear the screaming pigs.
