The man behind the Chi-lites.
Credit mainly goes to Marshall Thompson, for forming the Chicago soul group. But the success lies with the late Eugene Record. Like the Miracles with Smokey listed with his members and solo, as writer of the majority of their hits. The same must be assigned to Mr. Record. He wrote some of the most lovely soul songs to emerge from Chi-town. Like Curtis Mayfield, this man contributed to making the town of Chicago known as a hit making city.
Under the guidance of Carl Davis, who trusted the young writer. Mr. Record never failed to deliver a Brunswick hit. I’ll admit, by listening to his songs. You get a feeling he was always chasing the girl or woman in question, in his lyrics. Songs like “The coldest days of my life” or “Have you seen her” and many others. But every writer has a subject that addresses the topic he’s seeking to address as an issue.
An even the other members has to say. He was a major part of the success that they tour to today. While the troupe today has added a female. It don’t take away from the group. And as Mr Record has passed, his status as a great writer is still in existence for others to see.

When long time lead singers dies. Other members who never did major lead singing wants to become lead. Robert Lester, good singer, but nowhere near Eugene in singing the song. Marshall a good singer. But not the lead spotter in the groups. Sure having a new lead singer means all attention is center on him. But that’s the position you audition him for. Billy Griffin, knew this as a member of the Miracles he wasn’t being bought in to be a backup to the others. Damon Harris, knew he was taking Eddie Kenderick spot. Eugene songs require that certain tone.
