This article is the first installment of my favorite concert moments article series, based on my personal concert experiences. This is about the Bon Jovi Have a Nice Day tour concert in Munich, Germany.
Going to great gigs used to be a problem for me. I lived in Turkey and while a lot of my favorite bands came to Turkey in the early 90s and rocked stadiums, there was a problem: I was a kid in the early 90s and not exactly a rock fan! Then some things happened. Bands broke up, gave a break, turned to pop, didn’t include Turkey in their tours……And up until I was 16, I hadn’t been to a single rock concert. Then things changed for the better. Bryan Adams came to Istanbul for a lovely mini stadium concert,Sebastian Bach (Skid Row singer) gave a concert in Istanbul on my 18th birthday! After that, I was traveling a lot, the bands were coming to Turkey a lot more often and by 26, I have marvelous concert experiences that make my fellow rock fan friends jealous. This will be an article series and this is part 1.

Yes, by now a lot of you know I am a Bon Jovi fan. OK, that’s an understatement. Bon Jovi is my favorite band, has been since I was 11. But they came to Turkey when I was 9. So I had to wait a good 11 years before seeing them live. But it was all worth it.

While I don’t love all the songs in Bon Jovi’s albums after These Days (1995), there is an acception: the 2005 album Have a Nice Day. All the songs are great, none of them are pop and it pretty much rocks. For me, it is right up there with Keep The Faith and These Days and probably I like it more than Slippery When Wet and New Jersey.

I was in Norway at the time. If you are from a non-English speaking country that also is not from EU, you probably know what a pain in the backside it is to deal with visa procedures. But when I lived in Norway for a year, I had a residence permit that gave me the chance to walk in and out of all the Schengen countries with just my passport. So I went to the nearest Bon Jovi concert, which was in Germany.
I do have a detailed review on my blog of that great concert, but let me go over the highlights:
- It was the ultimate stadium experience- it took place at the Munich Olympic Stadium with nearly 70.000 Bon Jovi fans present.
- The front band was Nickelback!
- It lasted for 2.5 hours with about 25 songs and 2 comebacks! (you know the bit when the band pretends to say goodbye and you “lure”them into staying for a bit more with your applause and screams and whatever noise effect you can manage:)
- They played many songs from the new album and a lot of their classics.
- There was no special effects. And none was necessary. It was very glamorous just with the chemistry the band members had with each other and with the audience.
I just can’t wait to see them live again.

You are more than “halfway there” being fully fledged rock chick Zoey. I loved the earlier albums like Slippery When Wet. Stumbled in the Jungle.

I love hearing your enthusiasm for rock music. I have never been to a rock concert before. I think it might be a bit loud for my aging ears. Good work.

I really enjoyed this article Zoey and look forward to more of your experiences. I remember as a child not being able to afford to go 1960s groups that came to NZ.

Thanks so much for commenting Val. I hate that concert tickets are so expensive but it is better than not being able to see them at all.:)
