Why is this the case?

Over the past few years, particularly in primary schools, there has been a lot of talk within the government about what kind of lessons would benefit the pupils the most. Things like maths, English and science are mentioned heavily in such debates, but things such as music never are. With music being one of the most rewarding subjects in the world, then it leaves you wondering why this is the case.

One of the things that is amazing about music is the fact that it allows the listener to escape to wherever they would like to be at that moment in time. This is fantastic for children because they need a way to get away from any stresses that they may come across in their every day lives, and music allows them to do this safety. Not only this, but it develops a lot of creative skills in the child which would be useful in many other subjects across the curriculum. If a child learns the piano particularly, it can help with the multi tasking abiity as you need to use two hands at the same time, which is excellent for things like learning to drive when the child becomes a little bit older.

Some children in the UK already receive a one hour lesson of music each week for free, and parents of those children say that their music lessons are one of the best things that their child is able to do. However, this is usually down to the schools to choose whether they do this rather than government policy. Ideally, each school should have a member of staff who would be qualified to teach several different instruments, and they should be in school all day giving music lessons to small groups at any one time. If there is a bigger school then they might need more than one teacher, but it would be more than worth it in the long term.

With regards to being able to pay for the teachers who they choose to employ, the schools could organise a concert every half term to which parents would be invited. Tickets could be sold, as could refreshments in the interval, and this would certainly go some way to making sure that the teachers could be paid for. They could do other duties in the school too, for exam lunchtime supervision or exam invigilation, and this means that their position would almost pay for itself. Although the school would have to pay an amount of money at the beginning of the scheme in order to get the instruments, I am sure that this would be worth it in the long term.

Music is one of the most influential things in our lives when we think about it. Everything that we do is characterized by a song, and every moment has music alongside. How wonderful would it be if your child was not only able to listen to music, but if there were also able to BE the music?

What better way to get started in the morning than to listen to songs that have morning in the title. Here are ten songs with morning in the title.

1. Yardbirds – Good Morning Little Schoolgirl

This is a standard song that has been covered by a plethora of artists over the years. The Yardbirds were the only ones to take it in to the UK charts. It was their debut release in late 1964 and it climbed to a peak of number 44 in the UK charts.

2. Oasis – Sunday Morning Call

The Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants was an Oasis album that, it’s fair to say, wasn’t one of their best. Nevertheless, Sunday Morning Call was one of the stand out songs on the album. It was also released as a single and hit a peak of number 4 in the UK charts in July 2000.

3. Beatles – Good Morning Good Morning

Two good mornings for the price of one in the title of this classic Beatles track from their Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band album.

4. Cat Stevens – Morning Has Broken

This was one of 5 top 10 hits that Cat Stevens enjoyed in the UK charts. Released in early 1972 it hit a peak of number 9 in the charts.

5. Supernaturals – Monday Mornings

This is a slower version than the album version, but it is the only version on YouTube at the moment! The song features on the Supernaturals second album Tune A Day.

6. Razorlight – In The Morning

A big hit for Razorlight in the UK, In The Morning hit a peak of number 3 in the summer of 2006. Their follow up single in the UK was America which went all the way to the number one spot later that year.

7. Buddy Holly – Early In The Morning

Taking you all the way back to 1958 for this one. It was the 4th chart hit for Buddy Holly in the UK and reached a peak of number 17 in August 1958.

8. Primal Scream – Some Velvet Morning

It always seemed to me that Primal Scream couldn’t quite make their mind up whether they were a rock band or a dance band, so they settled on being somewhere in the middle. This one tends to the ‘dance’ side of things. Released as a single in November 2003 it reached number 44 in the UK charts.

9. Seekers – Morningtown Ride

The Seekers chart career neatly spanned from January 1965 until December 1967, during which time they scored 9 UK chart hits, 5 of which went top 3. Morningtown Ride was released in November 1966 and hit a peak of number 2 in the UK charts.

10. Val Doonican – Morning

This was the second last UK chart hit that Irish singer Val Doonican enjoyed in the UK charts. Released in late 1971 it climbed to a peak of number 12.

Hope you have enjoyed this list of 10 songs with morning in the title. There are plenty more songs out there that also have morning in the title, perhaps you can suggest some in the comments section.

The Voice season finale was a spectacle to behold. It was fun, energetic, suspenseful, engaging and magical. Flat out. I've been a huge fan of this season of the Voice and have been sluggish in response to American Idol. The young demo is flocking to NBC's the Voice and running away from Idol as if it were a zombie plague. How can Idol bounce back?

I used to love watching American Idol. It was decent. I was never a big fan of any of the winners. I never felt an emotional connection to the process or to the song choices but I love music and I love hearing people develop over time, but with The Voice, America’s Got Talent, X factor, the Glee Project and ABC’s new show Duets, what purpose does Idol have? There are simply too many singing shows and one of them has to go.

I hope it isn’t Idol.

Does that sound Odd? I’ve moved on from Idol but it has a legacy and changed the scope of musical television. Without Idol, the only musical competitions will be Star Search and that just SUCKS. So American Idol needs to shape up before it gets the axe. It needs to court young people. It needs to bring back the fun and the excitement that it once held. And this is how they can do it.

5. Stop using the same songs!

Every week on these reality shows we are treated to some sort of thematic element that helps contestants choose their songs. Sometimes it’s as simple as “country week” or “year you were born”. OK. Those aren’t too bad but they get so repetitious. Can we please stop hearing the same songs every year? Let’s try pushing the boundries a bit by creating new themes every year that eliminate the reptitious nature by asking the artists to select songs that meet new criteria. Instead of always having “Country week”, can we have “outlaw country” week one year? Can we have different artists, someone like Patsy Cline or Billy Holliday instead of always The Beatles? If we can’t do these kinds of themes, can we at least put a “waiting period” on songs. If a song has been done within the last three years, you can’t pick it. Simple as that.

4. Stop with the Group Songs

Duets is going to drive the group thing into the ground and, let’s be honest Idol, you’ve never been great at it. They almost always sound like weak kareoke night mash ups. STOP IT. People don’t like these lame attempts at filling in the time. Which leads us into number 3!

3. I want to see what these people can do!

Look, I know you only have so much time. I get it. Sometimes, especially during the begining of the season, time is tight. Later in the season, though, you start piling on the crap. It gets so old. We don’t need to hear lame asses like Rihanna. We don’t need to hear the Black Eyed Peas. We don’t need old geezer rock bands. WTF was with Iggy Pop a few years ago? REALLY? C’mon! I think we can all agree that giving each singer the time to tell a story through their music is the best option. Let us see what a concert will look like. Let us get a feeling for what their album will be. Three songs, in a row, on the same stage and in the same clothes. Let’s take it away from weaksauce awards show performances and bring it into a glimpse at them on the road. This will help us bond with the artists more, will help make the better singers stand out and lets us see their stage presence better. It also tells us who has the energy to put on a good show.

2. Jimmy Iovene or whatever is an idiot.

I know you brought him on because you think the show suffers without a hardass like Simon. To be honest, it does. But Jimmy sucks. He’s boring. He’s not clever. He’s unfairly harsh to the better singers and overly complimentary to the weak ones. He judges based on taste, not talent, and he has no taste for anything that isn’t some dumb pop song. He regularly criticizes Jessica Sanchez, one of the best singers this show has ever seen, but applauds people who are just moronic. He doesn’t like depth. He doesn’t like cleverness. If it isn’t cookie cutter pop nonsense, he hates it. He’s bringing the show down. I’d say get rid of the judges too, but the show doesn’t work without judges. If you can find decent judges, that’d be fantastic, but start with hiring a producer or what ever Jimmy is supposed to be who isn’t a terrible embarrassment!

and the best way for Idol to remain relevent?

1. Original Songs.

As someone who has watched the show since it’s begining, who remembers contestants from the frist season who got robbed (I’m looking at you Tamyra Grey) and who has listened to albums by the various artists, I’d like to say that when it comes to getting their new music I always feel a bit ripped off. They almost never sound like they did on Idol (with the exception of David Cooke). If we had original songs from the top 12 on, we could set the show up to always have fresh, original music that sounds young and hip, compete against all the other singing shows which do not allow original songs and finally, sell albums that rock. Each of the top 12 can sell their singles on itunes, get some money and be a successful artist. Idol can get decent producers and song writers in if the contestants want them, can help shape albums week by week by the contestants. The ones who lose early on only get a single or an EP, the ones who make it to the end get a full length album and the fans get the album RIGHT AWAY. We don’t have to wait for a year to find out what the artist is going to do. We don’t have to hope we made the “right choice”. The Voice counts sales as votes. If Idol wants to do this, they can. It’ll help. We’ll get a decent idea for what the contestants want to do and we’ll know if we like THEM. We’ll get to know THEM. Not their favorite singers. Not the motown hit that their mom used to play in the kitchen or the cheesy 80s song that topped the charts the day they were born. The theme weeks can be a love song, a dance song, an edgy song, a broken hearted suicide song, I don’t really care. We can push them to write something up tempo, down tempo, or mid tempo. We can say “this is powe ballads week, give it your best shot”. And they will. And we’ll know who they see themselves as. And you’ll make more money.

OK?

Can we do this?

Please?

Britpop band Cast scored plenty of hits but the only compilation album of the band, for some unknown reason, fails to include some of their biggest hits.

It was as early as January 1989 that the La’s song There She Goes first entered the UK charts, peaking at a lowly number 59. The next chart entry for the band came in September 1990 when Timeless Melody hit a peak of number 57. In November of the same year There She Goes was re-released and rocketed to a high of number 13, staying on the charts for 6 weeks. The future, for the La’s, was beginning to look good. And yet, that’s not how it panned out. Despite releasing their debut album to much acclaim in 1991, their next assault on the singles chart failed to break the top 40 when Feelin’ only made it to number 43. It was the last time the La’s would hit the charts apart from a number 65 appearance for There She Goes in 1999.

The two main members of the La’s were Lee Mavers (guitar and vocals) and John Power (bass and vocals). The rest of the bands line-up seemed to change from day to day! By the end of 1991, annoyed with the lack of ‘direction’ of the La’s, John Power quit the band. The career of the La’s was all but over, but John Power was soon to start his own band that would become one of the best Britpop bands ever.

By the time Britpop had got underway, John Power had already established his new band Cast. They first hit the UK charts in July 1995 with the song Finetime which hit a peak of number 17. Over the next four years Cast released a total of 10 songs that all went top 20. In fact, 7 of them went top 10. An impressive run of hits by anyone’s standards and validation of sorts for John Power. The second last chart hit of Cast was Magic Hour which only hit number 28 in August 1999 and the last one was Desert Drought which only reached number 45 in July 2001.

Cast – Finetime

Fans of the band bought enough of their first three albums to send the albums to numbers 7, 3 and 6 in the album charts respectively. Disappointingly, their 4th, and last, album did not sell well at all, only making number 78 in the album charts.

Yadda, yadda, yadda; etc etc. The discography of Cast is very good, but all that is missing is a Best Of compilation album. Hold on, you might be saying, didn’t Cast release a compilation album in 2004 called The Collection? Yes, yes they did – it was a compilation album billed as a collection of singles and b-sides. A ‘Best Of’ it certainly wasn’t.

The Collection album is an 18 track album, but it only finds room for five of the bands 12 hit singles – that’s less than half. Omitted from the album are the first four singles – Finetime, Alright, Sandstorm and Walkaway – which all appeared on Cast’s debut album All Change (which is arguably their finest album). Also missing from the compilation album are Guiding Star (number 9 hit in June 1997), Beat Mama (number 9 hit in May 1999) and Desert Drought (last chart hit, number 45 in July 2001).

Cast – Sandstorm

The biggest problem is that there does not exist a compilation of music from Cast that includes all their hits, and that is a disappointment for any fan of the band or, indeed, for any potential fan of the band. Not every band from the Britpop era managed to score as many chart hits as Cast did but most of them have at least been treated to a ‘Greatest Hits’ or ‘Best Of’ that included all of their charts hits. But not Cast.

Cast – Walkaway

For any music lovers out there who like their guitar bands, looking in to the work of Cast is well worth it. Although purchasing The Collection album may be a good start to get in to the band, it is probably also worth locating their debut album All Change. It’s the best one can do unless a proper ‘Best Of’ the music of Cast is ever released.

Here we will look at five songs with Tuesday in the title.

Way back in 2009 an article was published entitled: From Monday To Sunday: A Song A Day. The article looks at one song for every day of the week! It was always my intention to go back to that subject and explore it more deeply. So better late than never, here are five songs with Tuesday in the title.

1. Tuesday Morning – Pogues

The chart career of the Pogues isn’t as good as one might think (with the exception of one song). They scored two top 10 hits, firstly when they teamed up with the Dubliners in the Spring of 1987 for the song The Irish Rover, and secondly (and most famously) with Fairytale Of New York later on that same year. The latter of those two songs seems to hit the top ten in the UK charts ever single year at Christmas time due to download sales. Anyway, the only other song that the Pogues managed to take in to the top 20 in the UK charts was Tuesday Morning, which hit a peak of number 18 in August 1993.

2. Ruby Tuesday – Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones released Ruby Tuesday as a double A-Side with the song Let’s Spend The Night Together, reaching a peak of number 3 in January 1967. The song was later covered by Melanie who took her version to 9 in 1970. Many years later, in 1993, Rod Stewart took his cover version to a peak of number 11 in the UK charts.

3. Tuesday Afternoon – Moody Blues

This song, written by Moody Blues member Justin Hayward, first appeared on their 1967 album Days Of Future Passed. The following year it was released as a single, but failed to chart in the UK although it did climb to a peak of number 24 in the US.

4. Sweet Tuesday Morning – Badfinger

Badfinger had their first UK chart hit with their version of the Paul McCartney penned song Come And Get It. It reached a peak of number4 in early 1970. A year later they hit a peak of number 5 with the song No Matter What. A year after that they had their third and final chart hit with the number 10 hit Day After Day. The song Sweet Tuesday Morning appeared on their third studio album Straight Up.

5. Tuesday’s Gone – Lynyrd Skynyrd

Tuesday’s Gone was featured on the debut album from Lynyrd Skynyrd. As a point of interest it has been covered by acts as diverse as Metallica and Hank Williams JR.

Here we look at five songs with Monday in the title.

Way back in 2009 an article was published entitled: From Monday To Sunday: A Song A Day. The article looks at one song for every day of the week! It was always my intention to go back to that subject and explore it more deeply. So better late than never, here are five songs with Monday in the title.

1. Monday, Monday – Mamas & The Papas

What better place to start on a list of songs with Monday in the title than one that has it twice in the title. This Mamas & The Papas song was their second hit in the UK and reached a peak of number 3 in May 1966. It did better in the US though as it hit the number one spot.

2. Blue Monday – New Order

The only word to truly describe this New Order song is classic. Its first release was in March of 1983 when it climbed to a peak of number 12 in the UK charts. It dropped out the charts but then re-entered later on the same year reaching a peak of number 9. It was then remixed in 1988 and reached a peak of number 3 in the UK charts. It got its second remix in 1995 and reached number 17. It also managed to sneak back in to the charts on downloads in 2006! Classic!

3. Monday Morning – Fleetwood Mac

Monday Morning was the opening track on the 1975 self titled album by Fleetwood Mac. The song had been performed live by the band for a number of years before finally being recorded in the studio for the album.

4. Manic Monday – Bangles

There are a large number of people who would quite agree that Monday is a manic day, so it was with no surprise really that this was such a big hit. Manic Monday was the debut chart hit in the UK for the Bangles and reached a peak of number 2 in early 1986.

5. New Moon On Monday – Duran Duran

Not really one of the better known songs by a band who took their name from Barbarella. Nonetheless, it still managed to hit the top 10 in the UK charts, reaching a peak of number 9 in February 1984.

There are many cover versions out there in the world of music, but it is quite rare to find cover versions that turn the context of the song from love to hate. Here are two examples of covers songs that do change the context from love to hate.

There are many cover songs out there in the world of music. It is not unusual for the sex of the subject to change when covered. For example, take the Phil Spector penned song, To Know Him Is To Love Him, originally a hit for The Teddy Bears, but when the Beatles recorded their cover version of it, naturally enough, they changed it to To Know Her Is To Love Her. It makes sense though to have a female singing it about a man and vice versa!

Changing the sex of the subject of a song happens quite frequently. What happens even less frequently than that is a cover version that changes the subject of the song from love to hate!

Morris Albert – Feelings

In 1975 Brazilian singer Morris Albert had a worldwide hit with this love song. It reached a peak of number 6 in the US charts and number 4 in the UK charts. It has been covered by many different bands and artists including Frank Sinatra, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald and Englebert Humperdink – each of them singing about love.

Fast forward to the Winter of 1998 and US rock band the Offspring released their 5th studio album Americana. Track number 6 on the album was their own padrody version of the Morris Albert hit Feelings. The Offspring changed the context of the song from love to hate.

Offspring – Feelings

It might be quite a simple trick to change the context of the lyrics from love to hate but it does work. It got me thinking of any other songs that have been covered that have changed the context of the lyrics from love to hate.

Small Faces – Whatcha Gonna Do About It?

This was the debut chart hit from the Small Faces and it reached a peak of number 14 in the UK charts in September 1965. Lyrically it is clear that it is a love song whereby the singer is declaring his love for a beau. Fast forward to early 1979 when the Sex Pistols recorded their version of it!

Sex Pistols – Whatcha Gonna Do About It?

Released on the Sex Pistols album The Great Rock And Roll Swindle, which had many cover versions on it, the Sex Pistols took the old Small Faces song and twisted it round from a love song to a song about hate. Again, quite simple but it does work.

That’s just a couple of examples of cover versions that have changed the context of the song from love to hate. I wonder, dear reader, if you know of any others like that?

A look at some of the bands who have blue in their name.

On writing an article entitled 10 More Songs With Blue In The Title, Triond user Allison Jae commented that there were a lot of songs out there with blue in the title – and indeed there are – but what about some bands with blue in their name. Well without further ado here is a look at some bands with blue in their name, although this isn’t an exclusive list.

Where better to start a look at bands with blue in their name than at a band called Blue. In April 1977 a UK group called Blue scored their one and only UK chart hit with a song called Gonna Capture Your Heart, hitting a peak of number 18 and staying on the charts for a total of 7 weeks. They have not to be confused with the UK boy-band Blue who started their UK chart career in June 2001 with the song All Rise. The more modern Blue managed to hit the UK number one spot on four different occassions and, in more recent years were the UK entry at Eurovision.

Blue – All Rise

Rewinding all the way back to February 1965 now and Babbity Blue scored a number 48 hit in the UK charts with a song called Don’t Make Me (Fall In Love With You). Not the only band or artist with blue in their name to have only scored one chart entry on the UK charts as there is also Blue Adonis (Disco Cop – number 27 in October 1998), Blue Bamboo (ABC and D – number 23 in December 1994), Blue Feathers (Let’s Funk Tonight – number50 in July 1982), Blue Haze (Smoke Gets In Your Eyes – number 31 in March 1972), Blue Melons (Do Wah Diddy Diddy – number 70 in June 1996), Blues Band (Blues Band EP – number 68 in July 1980), the Blues Brothers ( Everbody Needs Somebody To Love – number 12 in April 1990) and last but not least Blue Oyster Cult ((Don’t Fear) The Reaper – number 16 in May 1978).

Blue Oyster Cult – (Don’t Fear) The Reaper

And it doesn’t stop there. There are plenty of other bands with blue in their name who have scored 2 or 3 UK chart hits, such as Blue Aeroplanes, Blue Amazon, Blue Boy, Blue Mercedes, Blue Rondo A La Turk, Blue Zoo, and the Blueskins. Not too many big hits amongst that set of bands with blue in their title.

Blue Mink had a decent run of UK chart hits from 1968 until 1973. Blue Nile had a few chart hits in the late 80’s and early 90’s and another hit in 2004. Blue Pearl had some hits throughout the 1990’s the biggest of which was their debut single Naked In The Rain which hit a peak of number 4 in the Summer of that year.

Moving on now to the Bluebells who, between 1983 and 1985 scored 6 UK chart hits, the biggest of which was the number 8, June 1984, hit Young At Heart. Fast forward to 1993 and Young At Heart was re-released and raced all the way to the number one spot in the UK charts.

Bluebells – Young At Heart

You will have noticed that so far all the bands mention with blue in their title have started with the word blue and there is one more to complete that set and that was the ‘Britpop’ band the Bluetones who have scored 13 hits since the Summer of 1995, the best known being their 1996 number 2 hit Slight Return.

Now on to 5 other bands with blue in their name, in alphabetical order and, in brackets, the name of one of their biggest UK chart hit.

Deacon Blue (Real Gone Kid)

Deep Blue Something (Breakfast At Tiffany’s)

Moody Blues (Go Now)

Screaming Blue Messiahs (I Wanna Be A Flintstone)

Shocking Blue (Venus)

Deacon Blue – Real Gone Kid

There are quite a few other bands and artists who have charted in the UK that have had blue in their name but, to be honest, they have been songs that haven’t charted high enough to be remembered by anyone really!
So far, as you will have noticed, we have only looked at those that have charted in the UK. And yet, even trying to research for other bands or artists with blue in their name that haven’t charted in the UK very few come up. The best known, I would say, of those is Blue October!
So now it is over to you, dear reader, to see if you can name any other bands or artists that have blue in their name. Good luck.

Here is a list of 10 songs with silver in the title.

1. Beatles – Maxwell’s Silver Hammer

A typical Paul McCartney composition for the Beatles (not one of John’s favourites then). It appeared on the Abbey Road album.

2. David Essex – Silver Dream Machine (Part 1)

This was the first UK chart hit of the 1908s for David Essex and proved to be one of his biggest hits. It peaked at number 4 in the UK charts in April 1980 and stayed on the charts for a total of 10 weeks.

3. Hawkwind – Silver Machine

This is the best known song by Hawkwind and was by far their biggest ever hit. Originally released in the Summer of 1972 it peaked at an impressive number 3 in the UK charts.

4. Hundred Reasons – Silver

Hundred Reasons have had a number of hits in the UK without really threatening to set the charts alight. This song was their 4th single, released in May 2002, and was their highest chart hit, peaking at number 15.

5. David Soul – Silver Lady

The debut UK chart hit from David Soul was Don’t Give Up On Us Baby, which reached the number one spot (as it did in the US too). This song here was his third single and only other UK number one hit.

6. Wedding Present – Silver Shorts

In 1992 Wedding Present decided it would be a good idea to release one song every month (only Elvis Presley has released 12 singles in a calendar year before). Silver Shorts was their April offering and it reached a peak of number 14 in the UK charts.

7. Cliff Richard – Silvery Rain

Love him or hate him the chart career of Cliff Richard is staggering – his first chart hit was in 1958! Silvery Rain was released in April 1971 and reached a peak of number 27 in the UK charts.

8. Felix Da Housecat – Silver Screen Shower Scene

Despite the best efforts, five years of releasing songs only gathered one top 40 hit for Felix Da Housecat and this was it. On original release in the Summer of 2001 it only reached number 55 but when it was re-released in October 2002 it managed to climb to number 39!

9. Four Seasons – Silver Star

The only number one hit that the Four Seasons enjoyed in the UK was the early 1976 hit December 63 (Oh What A Night). Silver Star was the follow up single to that and reached a peak of number 3 in the UK charts in April 1976 – it was to be their last top 10 hit in the UK.

10. Echo & The Bunnymen – Silver

Echo & The Bunnymen have had a chart career that has spanned over 30 years, over which time they have scored only 15 top 40 hits. Silver was released in April 1984 and reached a peak of number 30 in the UK charts.
